Olympics

The summer olympics finally brought fun and excitement to the summer holidays.
The opening ceremony was one to remember with history of England all etched in within a couple of hours of Danny Boyle's masterpiece.
Usain Bolt managing to strike a double triple, smashing the previous world record into pieces in the 4X100m relay with a ridiculous time of 36.84 seconds.
Michael Phelps became the best olympian of all time, winning a total of 22 olympic medals throughout his career, an achievement Ian Thorpe was quick to praise.

Congratulations must go to Team GB, but it is sort of unfair that they should be considered 3rd best. This is because olympics has 3 medals not just golds, and in no. of total medals they are 4th. They also had massive home support which obviously made a difference. Plus the only medals Team GB ever manage to get are in sports that hardly mean anything, in other words, sports which I personally think should not be considered very proffesional. These include Sailing, Canoeing, Cycling, Boxing, Shooting and Equestrian. Without these, 11 golds, 8 silvers, 14 bronzes, 33 total.
They would be 6th or 7th place in no. of golds and 9th place or so in no. of total medals.
USA and china once again proved their part in the olympics.
Japan did fairly well, with a total of 38 medals to their name, but they seemed to have found a new love for silvers and bronzes.

  1. I agree with your point about equestrian (the horse does more than the the rider!), but what's wrong with cycling, or canoeing? They both use up as much physical energy as athletics, but this energy is just channeled through another means of accelerated movement. You even have the setback of carrying the extra weight.

    1. Well, cycling ok, but canoeing!?
It requires skill and teamwork but it is more like a leisure sport, and not really a competitive olympic style one.

  2. I think that team GB did amazing this year, the best they have ever done, and though this is kind of against my point, I still want to say it.

What sports are team GB best at?

The top 5 would probably include cycling, canoeing/rowing and equestrian.

What is the similarity between these sports?

They are all performed whilst you are sitting down.

Conclusion: We are best at the sports which involve sitting down.

I just saw that in a paper and it made me laugh, that we are good at the sports which do not require us to stand!
